Musikmakarna students awarded the Swedish Government's Honorary Award

Published: 27 Sep 2021

Ellen Berg from the songwriting duo Sunshine was awarded the Swedish Government's Honorary Award on Thursday, September 23, for efforts of special importance for the internationalization of Swedish music.

The statement was as follows:

When pop from South Korea, usually short and sweet K-Pop, has become a leading hit genre all over the world, there are many Swedes involved in the form of songwriters, producers and music companies. Among the first are the duo Sunshine - Moa "Cazzi Opeia" Carlebecker and Ellen Berg. Since 2017, the duo has been involved in several dozen number ones in the K-pop genre, with chart toppers in South Korea as well as globally. In 2020, Sunshine was involved in the song "We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal", on the album "Map Of The Soul: 7" from the giants of the genre, South Korean BTS. The album was a main ingredient in BTS becoming the best-selling artists in the world in 2020 according to statistics from music industry body Ifpi. Since 2017, Sunshine has collaborated with the producer duo Moonshine, Jonatan Gusmark and Ludvig Evers. These are also an important component of a Swedish pop export phenomenon that has been going on for decades and is now beginning to gain widespread attention and respect. Among the Swedish music companies that played leading roles when the K-pop scene turned blue and yellow are The Kennel, Cosmos and the Swedish office of South Korean EKKO Music. The music export award recognizes Sunshine, but the award is also a reward to a part of the music industry that aimed in a different direction than the majority.

Congratulations Ellen and good luck in the future!
